We are experiencing a beautiful October and the fall foliage has been spectacular. Here is a scientific explanation for why the Western Larch trees turn golden in the fall, even though they look like evergreens all summer. Bowman Lake in the North Fork has an impressive show of larch along the shoreline.

This time of year the larch trees are shutting down their systems for the winter. Just like other deciduous trees (larch trees are a deciduous conifer), in the fall larch trees move nutrients to other parts of the tree and the sugar making processes of chlorophyll in the leaves (needles) shuts down. As the chlorophyll is broken down other pigments begin to show. With larch that results in the spectacular display of golden hillsides throughout western Montana.

Chair 5 on the East Rim

For many Montana families, October is the time to fill the freezer with meat for the winter. It is about that and it is also about spending time high in the mountains on crisp fall days with family. My niece, Casey, with a big smile and her elk in the bag.

But the time is really very near for us to retreat from our summer and fall recreation locations in Glacier, the Flathead Forest and the Bob Marshall & Great Bear wilderness areas for the winter and leave them to the hardiest of animals. This moose will likely stay at Many Glacier for the season.

Whitefish Mountain Resort is touting their Ski Magazine Reader Survey results (best in the West for overall satisfaction) and very excited that they have broken another record in season pass sales. Here is their press release about the season pass record and snow statistics for the last couple of years.

The new location of Chair 5 on the East Rim makes for a beautiful ride over cliffs and past the best snow ghost forest on the Mountain. Looking forward to getting up there!

We hope you will join us for some winter fun! Kandahar's cozy rooms and wood-burning fire in the great room are waiting for you!!
